Simple Furniture Upcycling Projects for Beginners
Upcycling furniture is one of the most rewarding beginner DIY categories, since even small changes can transform a tired piece. The projects below don't require power tools beyond a basic sander and a drill.
Repaint a dresser or nightstand
A light sanding to rough up the existing finish, followed by a coat of primer and two coats of furniture paint, can completely change the character of an old dresser. Choosing a bold color on an otherwise plain piece is an easy way to make it a focal point.
Swap the hardware
New knobs and pulls are inexpensive and take only a screwdriver to install, but they can modernize a dated piece almost instantly. Measure the existing hole spacing before ordering new hardware to make sure it lines up.
Reupholster a chair seat
A simple drop-in chair seat is one of the easiest upholstery projects to start with. Remove the seat, use it as a template to cut new fabric with a few inches of extra margin, and staple the fabric taut on the underside with a staple gun.
